Frequently asked questions
What is the JLPT?
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the main international standardized test for non-native Japanese speakers. It measures reading, listening, vocabulary, and grammar, and is used by universities and employers worldwide.
How many levels does the JLPT have?
The JLPT has five levels, from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). N5 and N4 cover elementary Japanese, N3 is intermediate, and N2 and N1 are used for university admission and professional work in Japan.
How many words does each JLPT level cover?
JLPT N5 covers around 800 words, N4 about 1,500, N3 around 3,700, N2 around 6,000, and N1 around 10,000. Each level builds on the vocabulary of those below it.
Which JLPT level should I start with?
Start with N5 if you are new to Japanese. It covers basic hiragana, katakana, about 100 kanji, and everyday vocabulary. From there, work your way up one level at a time.
How long does it take to pass each JLPT level?
Rough guide for focused learners: N5 in 3–6 months, N4 in 6–12 months, N3 in 1–2 years, N2 in 2–3 years, N1 in 3–5 years. Self-study alone usually takes longer.
Do I need to know kanji to study JLPT?
Only a handful of kanji are required for N5 and N4, and the JLPT never tests character writing. JLPT in Depth keeps every word's kanji, reading, and English meaning together so you can focus on recognition first.
