JLPT N4

Usage of そう

The word そう is very versatile in Japanese and appears frequently in conversation. It can be used to confirm information, express hearsay, or indicate appearance or impression.

Confirming or Agreeing

When used alone or with ですね, そう functions as "that's right" or "I see," confirming or agreeing with what someone said.

Expressing Hearsay

When combined with verbs like 〜そうです, it indicates information heard from others, similar to "I heard that..." or "It seems that..." This is a common way to report secondhand information politely.

Indicating Appearance or Impression

When attached to the stem of an adjective or verb, そう means "looks like" or "seems to be." For example, おいしそう means "looks delicious."

Common Collocations

  • そうですね: used to agree or confirm politely.
  • 〜そうです: used to report hearsay.
  • 〜そうだ (after adjective stem): indicates appearance or impression.
  • そう言えば: a phrase to recall or add information, meaning "now that you mention it."

Notes

Be careful not to confuse そう with そうだ, which can also be a plain form of です or a casual hearsay marker. Context usually clarifies the meaning. Also, そう used alone as a response is a casual way to say "I see" or "Is that so?"
