くださる

くださる

(hon.) to give, to confer

JLPT N4

Meaning and Usage

"くださる" is the honorific form of the verb "くれる," which means "to give." It is used when the giver is someone of higher status or whom the speaker wishes to show respect to, such as teachers, customers, or elders. This verb always indicates that the action is done for the speaker or someone in the speaker's in-group.

Politeness and Context

Using "くださる" elevates the giver and shows humility from the speaker's side. It is common in polite conversations, business settings, and formal writing. Unlike "あげる," which is used when the speaker gives to others, "くださる" is used when someone gives to the speaker or their group.

Common Collocations

  • 〜をくださる: to give (honorific)
  • 〜てくださる: to do something for the speaker (honorific)
  • お〜くださる: polite prefix + verb stem + くださる, e.g., お話くださる (to kindly talk)

Common Mistakes

Learners sometimes confuse "くださる" with "くれる." Remember that "くださる" is the respectful form used to show respect to the giver. Also, it is not used when the speaker is the giver; in that case, use "あげる."
