JLPT N4

Meaning and Usage

The word "客" (きゃく) primarily means "guest" or "customer." It is commonly used in contexts involving people who visit a place, such as restaurants, shops, or events. When you say "客," you are referring to someone who is receiving hospitality or services.

Common Collocations

  • 客が来る (きゃくがくる): guests come — used when guests arrive at a place.
  • 客のサービス (きゃくのさーびす): customer service — referring to the quality of service provided to customers.
  • 客として (きゃくとして): as a guest — used when describing the role or status of someone invited.

Usage Notes

"客" is a neutral term and can be used in both formal and informal situations. However, in very polite contexts, you might hear "お客様" (おきゃくさま), which is a more respectful form. Be careful not to confuse "客" with "客間" (きゃくま), which means "guest room."
